Roughly 50 automobiles have been marked with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's town of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Automobiles, building surfaces and mailboxes were vandalized, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they reported in a release.
Police say they were notified late on Wednesday night, when a resident noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish liquid.
The substance had been placed in the shape of a banned symbol, they reported.
Officers then found many other marked cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under laws outlawing the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement say early analysis indicate the liquid was likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no lead as to its source; investigators are presently not aware of any physical harm in connection with the incident," they added.
Municipal representatives stated they were working "to unravel the incident" and have asked to the residents for information.
A senior official stated the incident left him stunned and had to be resolved rapidly.
"This incident strikes at the core of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the extremist violent incident in 2020," he posted on a platform, mentioning the murder of nine people by a gunman aiming at people of migrant background in 2020.
