Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Each time a prominent awards ceremony approaches, there’s always a demand for introducing fresh award types to honor unsung work and fill the hearts of fans with niche passions.

My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent above others. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories actually cover many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category during that awards season
  • Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title got ignored that year
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles worldwide and have been for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
